Ovarian follicles are small sacs inside the ovaries that produce hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle and are able to release eggs. When about to release an egg, the follicle will grow in size. The follicle tracking scan aims to predict the timing of ovulation, thus enhancing the likelihood of the egg being fertilised. To achieve a more accurate view of when the egg may be released, it is recommended to perform at least 3 follicle tracking scans within the same menstrual period however the number of scans required may vary from woman to woman. The first scan is usually performed on day 8 of the menstrual cycle. The timing of the follow up scans will be discussed and agreed with your sonographer after the first scan.

Is a medical referral necessary to schedule a scan?

No referral is required. If you are receiving treatment, your fertility clinic may refer you to have a scan. The scan provides useful information to share with your doctor. Should our sonographer observe anything of concern, you will be referred to discuss with your doctor for further investigations.

The Procedure
  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time. You will be welcomed at our clinic and asked to complete an informed consent form before each scan.
  • When ready, the sonographer will welcome you in the consultation room, confirm your details, the reason for your scan and discuss any particular concerns you may have
  • This scan is an internal (transvaginal) scan. Before proceeding with the scan, please ensure to inform us of any pre-existing medical conditions you may have.
  • The sonographer will explain to you what you are seeing. He/she may be quiet for a few moments while concentrating on measurements.
