More than a quick check

A thorough clinical assessment of the things that matter most

  • Growth Measurements

We measure your baby's head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length to assess growth and estimate current weight—key indicators of healthy development.
  • Amniotic Fluid Assessment

Fluid levels are checked carefully. Too much or too little can be significant, and we'll explain what we find and advise on any next steps.
  • Placenta Position & Condition

We assess where the placenta sits and how it looks—flagging anything that may need follow-up with your hospital or midwifery team.
  • Fetal Activity & Movement

We observe your baby's movements and general behaviour during the scan—an important indicator of how they're doing right now.
  • Estimated Fetal Weight

Based on measurements taken, we calculate your baby's estimated weight and compare it against expected growth charts for your gestation.
  • Unhurried Appointment

Plenty of time to see your baby, ask questions, and enjoy the moment without feeling hurried out the door.

Common questions about wellbeing scans

Concerned about your baby? Here's what you need to know.

  • What does a wellbeing scan check?

Our wellbeing scan assesses the key indicators of your baby’s health: growth measurements (head, abdomen, and femur length), amniotic fluid levels, placenta position and appearance, estimated fetal weight, and fetal movement and activity. You’ll receive a written report on the same day.

  • When can I have a wellbeing scan?

From 12 weeks to term. Most parents book a wellbeing scan in the second or third trimester—particularly after 24 weeks when growth becomes a more significant focus. There’s no upper limit; we see mothers right up to their due date.

  • What if the sonographer finds something concerning?

If we notice anything that warrants further investigation, we’ll explain clearly what we’ve seen and guide you on next steps—including referring you to your hospital of choice for clinical follow-up. We won’t alarm you unnecessarily, but we won’t withhold information either.

  • Can my partner come with me?

Absolutely! This is a moment to share. Partners, parents, siblings, and children are all welcome. Just let us know how many guests you’re bringing so we can ensure everyone is comfortable: we have room for 2 guests in the room, you may rotate guests during your appointment if you have more!

  • Does this replace my NHS scans?

No—we always recommend attending all your NHS appointments. Our wellbeing scan complements NHS care by giving you additional reassurance between appointments, or when you have a specific concern that can’t wait. Wellbeing scans do not replace NHS scans.

  • I've felt reduced movement—should I book this scan?

If you’re concerned about reduced fetal movement, contact your midwife or maternity unit first, as this can sometimes require urgent assessment. A wellbeing scan can provide additional reassurance but should not replace an urgent clinical review. If in doubt, call your hospital.

  • I’ve visited Flowan a few times over the last few years for various reasons and every time the service and care is outstanding. There are clinics much closer to me I could opt for but travel out of my way to Flowan simply for the service.
