Common questions about presentation scans

Preparing for birth? Here's what you need to know.

  • Why would I need a presentation scan?

    • Your midwife is uncertain about baby’s position
    • You want to confirm baby has turned from breech
    • You’re planning a home birth and want position confirmation
    • You have a higher BMI which can make manual examination less accurate
    • You simply want to know how baby is positioned before birth
  • What positions might my baby be in?

Cephalic (head down): The ideal position for vaginal birth—baby’s head is in your pelvis. Breech: Baby’s bottom or feet are down. This may require discussion about turning baby (ECV) or birth options. Transverse: Baby is lying sideways. This usually needs attention before labour begins.

  • What if my baby is breech?

If your baby is breech at 35-36 weeks, there’s still time for them to turn naturally. We’ll explain your options, which typically include waiting to see if baby turns, external cephalic version (ECV) at hospital, or discussing birth options with your consultant. Many babies do turn head down before 37-38 weeks.

  • Can you tell me more than just "head down"?

    • Which way baby is facing: Anterior (back against your tummy—ideal) or posterior (back against your back)
    • How engaged baby is: Whether their head is starting to move into your pelvis
    • Placenta position: Where your placenta is located
    • Amniotic fluid: Whether fluid levels appear normal
  • Can I use this report for my birth plan?

Absolutely. Your written report is designed to share with your midwife, consultant, or birth team. If you’re planning a home birth, or discussing options with your NHS team, this gives everyone clear, documented information.

  • My midwife already checked my position—why might I need a scan?

Manual palpation (feeling your bump) is a useful skill but has limitations—studies show it’s less accurate than ultrasound, particularly with higher BMI, anterior placenta, or unusual positions. If there’s any uncertainty, or you want confirmation before making birth decisions, a scan gives definitive answers.

  • How late can I have a presentation scan?

You can have a presentation scan right up until you go into labour. Many mothers book at 36-38 weeks for final confirmation, especially if they’ve had concerns about baby’s position earlier.

  • I’ve visited Flowan a few times over the last few years for various reasons and every time the service and care is outstanding. There are clinics much closer to me I could opt for but travel out of my way to Flowan simply for the service.
