Common questions about progesterone testing

Trying to conceive or in early pregnancy? Here's what you need to know.

  • When should I have a progesterone test?

For ovulation confirmation: 7 days after suspected ovulation (day 21 of a 28-day cycle, adjust for your cycle length). For early pregnancy: typically 4-6 weeks pregnant if you have symptoms, bleeding, or history of miscarriage. For fertility investigation: your doctor will advise timing.

  • Will my GP test progesterone?

GPs can test progesterone for fertility investigations, but there’s often a wait. In early pregnancy, they may only test if you have bleeding or pain. Private testing gives you fast access when you need answers, especially if you’re trying to conceive or have had previous losses.

  • Can low progesterone prevent pregnancy?

Yes. Low progesterone means the uterus lining isn’t properly prepared for implantation, or pregnancy can’t be maintained in the very early days. This is called luteal phase defect. It’s often treatable with progesterone supplementation.

  • What if my progesterone is low?

If low after ovulation, progesterone supplementation may help (pessaries or tablets in the luteal phase). In early pregnancy, your GP or EPU may prescribe progesterone support. Recent studies show progesterone can reduce miscarriage risk in women with bleeding or previous losses.

  • What is a normal progesterone level?

It depends on timing. After ovulation (mid-luteal phase): above 30 nmol/L confirms ovulation; above 40 nmol/L is ideal. In early pregnancy: levels should be rising; below 20 nmol/L may indicate problems. Share your specific result with your GP for tailored explanation.

  • What does progesterone do?

Progesterone prepares your uterus lining for pregnancy after ovulation and supports early pregnancy until the placenta takes over (around 10 weeks). Low progesterone can prevent implantation or cause early miscarriage. It’s essential for conception and maintaining pregnancy.
