Early Pregnancy Scan

The early signs of pregnancy can be detected via an ultrasound scan from as early as 6 weeks from the Last Menstrual Period (LMP). This scan confirms the pregnancy, establishes gestational dating, evaluates its positioning and development status, checks for fetal cardiac activity, and determines if multiple babies are present.

Everything anxious mothers ask us

We understand the worry. Here's what you need to know.

  • When is the earliest I can have a scan?

A scan can detect early signs of pregnancy from 6 weeks (calculated from the first day of your last period). At this stage, we can typically see the gestational sac, yolk sac, and often the fetal pole with a heartbeat. If you are want or need to come back later for another scan, it will count towards a reward system worth up to £20 off over 3 scans. We offer easy online booking and phone scheduling. We also offer pregnancy confirmation tests, if you do not want to wait to be 6 weeks to know with certainty.

  • What it's too early to see a heartbeat?

This happens, and it doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong. If we see a healthy gestational sac and yolk sac but no heartbeat yet, it may be a younger pregnancy: we’ll discuss what we’ve found, explain what to expect, and we can book a follow-up scan for you about a week later. We never leave you without answers or a clear next step.

  • Will I need a full bladder?

Yes—please drink two glasses of water 30–40 minutes before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder. A full bladder helps us get the clearest images with an abdominal scan. In early pregnancy (usually before 8 weeks), we may also use a transvaginal scan for better visualization—our sonographers will explain this gently and only proceed with your consent. In this case you will need to have an empty bladder, the sonographer will let you know this once there.

  • How long does the appointment take?

Plan for 15 minutes. Unlike rushed production-line scans, we take the time to explain what we’re seeing, answer all your questions, and make sure you leave with clarity. Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete your consent form.

  • And my partner come with me?

Absolutely. We welcome partners and family members to share this moment with you. Our scan room is comfortable and private. If your partner can’t attend, we can provide digital images to share—many mothers use them for sweet reveal moments at home.

  • What if something doesn't look right?

We’ll explain findings clearly and compassionately, never leaving you without support. We have established referral pathways with NHS Early Pregnancy Units and can guide you on next steps. If the news isn’t what you hoped, we will be here for you with kindness and understanding. You won’t face uncertainty alone.

  • Do I need a GP referral?

No referral needed. You can book directly online, by phone, or email—often for same-day or next-day appointments. We’re here when you need us, without waiting weeks for authorization. Share your results with your GP or pregnancy care provider for a more effective discussion with them.
