Common questions about post miscarriage scans

We understand this is a difficult time. Here's what you need to know about recovery scans.

  • When should I have a post miscarriage scan?

Timing depends on your situation. We suggest 6 to 8 weeks from having suffered a miscarriage or after 1 or 2 normal menstrual periods, preferably within the first 10 days of your cycle. We’re here when you’re ready.

  • How soon can I try to conceive again?

Commonly, you can try once bleeding has stopped and your cycle returns (typically 4-6 weeks) but you should discuss with your GP your particular situation for guidance on safest timing for you. Report from a scan can help a more informed discussion in this regard.

  • Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring one support person. We understand this is a difficult time and having someone with you can help.

  • What if tissue is still present?

We’ll explain what we see and advise you to share findings on the appearances of yoru scan with your GP or Early Pregnancy Unit. Commonly, they will explain that if tissue remains, you may wait for natural completion (expectant management), take medication to help pass tissue, or have a surgical procedure. Please discuss with your GP or maternity care provider.

  • Will I see anything distressing on the scan?

We understand this is a sensitive time. The scan shows your uterus lining and checks for remaining tissue. There won’t be a visible pregnancy. We’ll explain what we’re seeing gently and you can choose how much detail you want.

  • What will the scan show?

We’ll check whether your uterus has returned to its pre-pregnancy state and if any pregnancy tissue remains. This helps determine whether the miscarriage is complete or if you need further treatment (medication or surgical management).
