4D Wellbeing Scans

This scan is designed to assess the well-being of your baby and provide you with the very first 4D images of him or her, creating an exciting and emotional experience. Our qualified sonographers will conduct necessary measurements to ensure that your baby is active and growing as expected. They will also assess the amniotic fluid levels, the condition and position of your placenta, and estimate the fetal weight. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to bond with your baby, seeing his/her face (if not hiding!), perhaps yawning or even sucking his/her thumb, creating cherished memories to hold onto forever.

Common questions about 4D scans

Planning your bonding scan? Here's what you need to know.

  • When is the best time for a 4D scan?

The optimal window is 22-32 weeks. Before 22 weeks, baby hasn’t developed enough fat under their skin for detailed facial features. After 32 weeks, there’s less room to move and baby’s face may be pressed against the uterus. We find 26-30 weeks often gives the best images.

  • What if baby isn't in a good position?

Babies have their own agenda! If your baby is facing your back, has their hands over their face, or the placenta is in front, we may not get clear facial images. We’ll try different techniques—sometimes a short walk or a cold drink helps. If we can’t get good images, we’ll discuss options including a follow-up appointment.

  • What factors affect image quality?

Several factors influence 4D image quality which are not within the sonographer’s control:

    • Baby’s position – facing outward is ideal
    • Amniotic fluid levels – more fluid generally means clearer images
    • Your hydration – drinking plenty of water in the days before helps
    • Placenta position – anterior (front) placenta can reduce clarity
    • Baby’s activity level – some movement helps us find good angles
    • Maternal body composition
  • Can I bring family to watch?

Absolutely! Partners, grandparents-to-be, siblings, and friends are all welcome. Watching your baby together on our large screen is a wonderful shared experience. Just let us know how many guests you’re bringing.

  • Is 4D scanning safe?

Yes. 4D scanning uses the same ultrasound technology as standard 2D scans—it’s simply a different way of processing the image. We follow all safety guidelines and keep scanning time as brief as needed while still capturing beautiful images.

  • Will you check if everything is okay with my baby?

A 4D bonding scan isn’t a diagnostic anomaly scan—it’s designed for bonding and beautiful images. However, we will check baby’s position, movements, and general wellbeing. If we notice anything that warrants further investigation, we’ll discuss this with you. We always recommend attending your NHS 20-week anomaly scan.
