Pelvic Scan

A Pelvic Scan is a gynaecological Ultrasound assessment of your pelvic organs: womb, lining of the womb, ovaries, fallopian tubes and surrounding structures. This type of scan aims to rule out any structural cause that might explain the symptoms you are experiencing, such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, infrequent periods, difficulty conceiving, recurrent miscarriages, bloating, generalized pelvic pain or any other related issue. If you have family history of any pelvic issues, you may also wish to just have regular check-ups to ensure normal appearances and general structural health of your pelvic organs.

Common questions about pelvic scans

Investigating pelvic pain, periods, or fertility? Here's what you need to know.

  • What can a pelvic scan detect?

A pelvic scan can identify fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, uterine polyps, and abnormalities in your ovaries or uterus. It’s also used to investigate pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, and fertility concerns. The scan provides detailed images that help your healthcare provider understand what’s happening.

  • Can I have a pelvic scan during my period?

Yes, in most cases. For some concerns (like fibroids or endometriosis), scanning during your period is fine. For fertility-related scans, timing can matter—we may recommend booking for specific days of your cycle. Contact us when booking and we’ll advise the best timing for your specific needs.

  • What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring any relevant medical history, list of current medications, and details of symptoms you’re experiencing. For abdominal scans, you’ll need a full bladder (drink 4-5 glasses of water 1-2 hours before). For transvaginal scans, an empty bladder is preferred. We’ll give you specific preparation instructions when you book.

  • Do I need a referral for a pelvic scan?

No, you can book directly with us without a GP referral. Many women choose private pelvic scans for faster access or because they prefer not to wait for NHS appointments. We’ll provide a detailed report you can share with your GP or consultant.

  • Is a pelvic scan uncomfortable?

Most women find pelvic scans tolerable. Transvaginal scans can feel slightly uncomfortable but shouldn’t be painful. Abdominal scans require a full bladder which can feel uncomfortable, but the scan itself is painless. Our sonographers work gently and explain every step to keep you comfortable.

  • What's the difference between transvaginal and abdominal scans?

A transvaginal scan uses a small probe inserted into the vagina for close-up, detailed images of your ovaries and uterus. An abdominal scan is performed over your lower abdomen with a full bladder. Transvaginal scans provide clearer images for most pelvic concerns, but we’ll discuss which option is best for you when you book.
