Common questions about beta hCG testing

Worried about your pregnancy? Here's what you need to know about viability testing.

  • What is beta hCG?

Beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is the pregnancy hormone detected by pregnancy tests. Blood tests measure the exact level, while home tests just show positive/negative. In healthy early pregnancy, hCG doubles every 48-72 hours.

  • Can hCG testing diagnose ectopic pregnancy?

Not on its own, but it’s a key indicator. Ectopic pregnancy typically shows slow-rising hCG (not doubling every 48-72 hours). Combined with symptoms (pain, bleeding) and an ultrasound, hCG levels help identify ectopic pregnancy. If we’re concerned, we’ll refer you for  immediate medical review at the nearest hospital.

  • What if my hCG isn't rising properly?

Slow-rising or plateauing hCG can indicate miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Falling hCG usually means miscarriage has started. We’ll provide your results immediately to share with your GP or Early Pregnancy Unit urgently if results are concerning. Some hospitals may offer you prompt progesterone therapy to attemp supporting a struggling pregnancy. particularly if you have a history of miscarriages. Ask your hospital.

  • Do I need more than one test?

Usually yes. A single hCG level tells you you’re pregnant but not if pregnancy is developing normally. Serial tests (48-72 hours apart) show whether hCG is rising appropriately. We recommend at least 2 tests, sometimes 3.

  • What hCG level is normal?

It varies hugely by how pregnant you are. At 4 weeks: 5-426. At 5 weeks: 18-7,340. At 6 weeks: 1,080-56,500. The trend matters more than the number—it should double every 2-3 days in early pregnancy. Share results with your GP or maternity care provider to discuss next steps.

  • When should I have a viability test?

If you have bleeding, cramping, or pain in early pregnancy (before 8 weeks) or have had an inconclusive early pregnancy scan (no heart beat detected yet). If you’ve had previous miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy and want monitoring. If your pregnancy test is faint or you’re not sure if pregnancy is progressing. Usually from 4-8 weeks pregnant.
